Why choose Invisalign over traditional braces?

Posted on 6 November 2018 by Lorraine Barrett

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is one of the newest and most technologically advanced ways of moving teeth to achieve a better smile. In the last few decades dentistry is working towards improving the health and appearance of patients mouths with as little work on the teeth as possible.

In basic terms Invisalign is a series of aligners (a clear plastic appliance that sits tight against the teeth – similar to a clear retainer) that the patient wears in order to move their teeth in a desired direction. They are custom made with their unique SmartTrack material which has been clinically proven to control tooth movement with gentle force.

How Invisalign can help you

Invisalign is more commonly used to achieve a more ‘aesthetic’ or straight smile however that’s not all! Straighter teeth are less susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease and so investing in a straighter smile could save you money on costly dental treatment in the future.

Benefits of Invisalign

  • The most obvious benefit is that in comparison to traditional brackets that are placed on teeth to straighten them Invisalign is virtually invisible.
  • Patients don’t complain of discomfort from sharp wires or brackets and therefore an overall less painful experience in comparison to traditional braces.
  • Freedom to eat whatever you choose as there is no risk of breaking brackets or wires.
  • They are removable and so cleaning your teeth should be as normal.
  • The individual movement of teeth can be controlled and we can design your smile the way you want using our Clinicheck technology.
  • Having a beautiful smile helps build self-confidence and comfort with your appearance

What’s the catch?

  • Invisalign is heavily dependent on patient compliance, the aligners need to be worn for a minimum of 22 hours a day, which means only removing them for eating. If you are not motivated then Invisalign is not for you.
  • There will be some discomfort in the teeth as they are being moved, this is completely normal and unfortunately there is no way to straighten teeth without experiencing this. We have recently done a case on our receptionist and she has reassured me that it is not enough to require pain killers or prevent her from eating.
  • A removable retainer will need to be worn at night to keep the teeth in their final position
  • Invisalign is not suitable for everyone and the best form of treatment will depend on the individual case. For every case we will assess which treatment will be best for you. To find out if you are eligible for Invisalign come in for a free initial assessment.
